UPDATE: Secretary of State Blinken Announces Termination of U.S. Asylum Cooperative Agreements with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras

Following President Biden’s February 2, 2021, Executive Order that the Secretary of State consider whether to terminate the Trump era Asylum Cooperative Agreements with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, Secretary of State Blinken announced that the U.S. had begun the process of terminating those agreements. At the same time, Secretary Blinken noted the U.S. would continue to work with those governments to manage migration across the region.

While the agreement with Guatemala had already gone into effect, any transfers under that agreement were suspended due to the pandemic.  And the agreements with El Salvador and Honduras had not yet been fully enacted.
