On January 26, 2021, the Senate confirmed Antony Blinken’s nomination for Secretary of State by a vote of 78-22. He was sworn in later that day.
Mr. Blinken previously served as Deputy Secretary of State and Deputy National Security Advisor under President Obama.
The State Department is one of the executive departments responsible for implementing and enforcing U.S. immigration law, specifically through its embassies and consulates overseas. This includes issuing immigrant and nonimmigrant visas as well as administering U.S. refugee assistance and admission programs.
