On January 5, 2015, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians, allowing Syrians who have already obtained TPS to re-apply and for Syrians who have arrived to the United States more recently to apply for TPS. This extension and re-designation is for 18 months, from April 1, 2015 through September 30, 2016.
Syrians who already have TPS must reapply within the 60-day re-registration period, which runs from January 5, 2015 through March 6, 2015.
Syrians who do not already have TPS and who have entered the United States more recently must apply during the 180-day initial registration period, which runs from January 5, 2015 through July 6, 2015. To be eligible for TPS, the applicant must demonstrate continuous residence in the United States since January 5, 2015 as well as continuous physical presence in the United States since April 1, 2015, the effective date of TPS re-designation.
Those who already have a pending application for TPS do not need to file a new application. Those applications will be treated as an application under this re-designation.
