President Trump Issues Executive Orders on Immigration

On January 25, 2017, President Donald Trump signed two Executive Orders on immigration.

Through these Orders, the President has ordered:

(1) the construction of a wall along the United States’ southern border

(2) a study of security at the southern border

(3) the hiring of 5,000 additional Border Patrol agents and 10,000 immigration enforcement officers

(4) the establishment of detention facilities along the southern border

(5) the end of the “catch and release” policy

(6) the withdrawal of federal funding for cities and states that “harbor illegal immigrants”

(7) prioritizing the removal (or deportation) of immigrants with criminal records, including those with pending criminal charges and those who “pose a risk to public safety or national security”

(8) the reinstatement of the Secure Communities Program

(9) the publication of a weekly report of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants along with a list of jurisdictions that have ignored detention requests

(10) increased pressure on nations that fail to cooperate in taking back individuals the United States wants to deport

It is still too early to know exactly what effects this Order will have or even if any part of it will survive potential legal challenges. More Executive Orders on immigration are also expected. Please visit our website for future updates.
